It was a nice morning. Reasonable.
“What exactly does that I mean, reasonable?” I asked myself, trudging along, the sun in my groggy eyes. “Open to reason? Look, Mr. Sun, say I attempt a jog, and you don’t boil me in Humidity Soup, but I sweat a little, would that be amenable?” My thoughts floated on with varying success at connection and articulation.
I decided that whatever the definition, it sure was a beautiful day. And to remind me that not everything had to fit in the world of Josh, a small pebble sat waiting for me on the pavement. It was perfectly heart-shaped - and nifty. I picked it up. I liked it for a variety of reasons, not all of them apparent. But I’d like to increasingly be in the frame of mind to appreciate things I don’t quite know why I appreciate them, if that makes any sense.
This brings up the subject of poetry. A dude brought some of his work by the writer’s group last night. As the last line died away in the wondering room, I was gripped with some “Fred Randall” applause. (The fun starts at the :40 mark.)
“This went right over my head, but I dig it!” (I didn’t yell, but DID wave my arms.) Instead of the usual slash ‘n burn edits I return, I wrote a poem in reply on the page. Something about wandering down bigger halls than usual and bright colors. (The feeling I get at an art gallery. I miss 90% of the stuff there, but man is it good for the soul.)
And on the topic of poetry, a young reader answered last week’s request for work, and sent me a delightful bit inspired by Schumann’s The Wild Horseman.
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!
By Giulia E. McBride
Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!
I must really scurry!
I'm the Wild Horseman,
A very crazy person.
I ride my horse
With my leather purse;
Inside it, I carry souvenirs and treasures
All of which are my pleasures,
I travel across deserts, mountains, and plains, And very rarely it rains.
Very swiftly, I journey through many states, And it feels as though the world I overtake.
I only carry what I need,
And with them, I take heed.
My horse is faster than the wind;
My lasso certainly spins!
But, since I'm the Wild Horseman,
And a very crazy person,
I have many things to attend.
My story I'll have to expand
Some other day.
For now, I must Hurry! Hurry! Hurry!
Thanks, Giulia! And have a great day everyone, regardless of if we know why. I’m off to clean house. I’d better hurry. :)
