Happy Pi Day Letter 73 3/14/22 1:59 pm
Howdy, folks! How ya doing over there? Enjoying that progression of spring? What was up with that snow the other day? I was ready to complain to the manager. “I moved south. What is this?” Ah, at least it was novel. Happy “Pi Day!” You see, it’s March 14th, or 3.14, the number that’s both miraculous, and the bane of an 8th grader’s existence. Why, just the other day, I was talking to a guitar student, and the subject of Pi came up. He didn’t understand it, and I had mostly forgotten it, but with the help of the Internet and three bits of string to describe the circumference of a circle, we both got a kick out of investigating and remembering this gem. Either way, the suggested observation of this important day is obtaining and solving a Pie. You can calculate radius and diameter and all that good stuff, but to truly understand, and to solve, sometimes the equation should be tasted. (I always get an A+ when math is presented like that!)
In spring news, the fellas of all species are really suiting up in their finest. I looked out the window the other day, and had to grab some binoculars. Remember the wild turkeys from last week? They were back, along with a big ol’ Tommy Turkey, all fanned up and looking spiffy! The hens…just ignored him. He would strut around, and they kept nonchalantly looking for bugs. I know how he feels. I tried to slip in a poetry reference talking to a lady friend recently..you know, smooth like. I even said it with a straight face. She laughed and laughed. I guess some things are universal! Ha! The frogs are back, too. A few days ago, it seemed a good idea to head to the grocery store. A million toads hopping around on the rainy pavement changed my mind. Didn’t want to squish the poor fellas! Boxed rice could wait. The Spring Peepers, aptly named for their piping call, have climbed into a muddy symphony stage, singing the night away in a Spring Nocturne in C minor. I went out to look for ‘em, and recorded the journey on my podcast. (A “podcast” is like a pre-recorded radio show you can access on the internet. Check it out at www.SoundCloud.com/TheSignalman next time you’re at a computer.)
Stay strong, and talk to ya next week! - Josh
