I finally blew the amp. That thing had lasted through weddings, block parties, community days, you name it…there it sat under my DJ table, quietly pumping a thousand watts into the subwoofer. It died at the daycare center’s Halloween party. Well, I guess everything must go, but it seems a rather Elvis death for such a steadfast piece of gear.
Most of my DJ work involves rock ‘n roll records from the 50’s for a senior audience. The sub stays home. But, DC is calling this weekend with some big parties, so it was time to break in the new amp. Nothing like running some “nuclear tests.” Oh man, it works great! It was good to spend a little time sharpening the skills, too. I remixed Frank Sinatra once, and the audience hated it. Most of my stuff involves presenting, not beat matching and scratching, so woodshed time is important.
Along the way, I realized I needed some new samples to drop in the mix. Movie quotes and pop culture references are favorites.
“Can you fly this plane and land it?” “Surely you can’t be serious.” “I am serious. And don’t call me Shirley.” (Airplane.)
“You know what will help you sort through these important issues?” “What?” “ORANGE MOCHA FRAPPUCCINO!” (Zoolander.)
Then I had it. Chris Rock over the Fresh Prince theme. All the internet can talk about is the infamous Oscars. I’m alternately fascinated and saddened. (And wondering if it’s real.)
But wait - there’s my 24 year old self, ranting in a previous blog about how performers have the duty to treat their platform with deadly seriousness. “It’s just entertainment” doesn’t cut it as an excuse. Own it. Mean what you say. This doesn’t mean that your words have to be soft. The truth usually isn’t. This doesn’t mean that they can’t be funny. Comedy is vital - a needed critique of the social structure that’s always in danger of stagnation. I’m sure the Emperor was offended to have his nakedness pointed out.
But me using the easiest joke ever to score cheap points, especially in front of kids? Nah, man.
I did, however, go looking for Jordan Peterson saying “Good luck with that, Bucko.” That sample will work anywhere.
This popped up along the way. I was delighted, and hope you enjoy.
