Hey folks!
Big thanks to Tim over at The Observer’s Notebook, the official podcast of the Association of Lunar and Planetary Observers. He had me by a few weeks ago to talk about blind astronomy, and the episode posted yesterday. It sure was a pleasure to chat with him, and I hope you guys enjoy it!
While I was listening to it, I realized - I’ve been dragging my feet about making a tactile (“braille”) star map. “Oh, I need to look into that” I kept telling myself. So, I finally went online and bought a 3D printer.
It reminds me of that time that CDs were getting popular. My dad had been pondering the ideal solution for a while. One day, mom said “I’ll be back.” About an hour later, she marched in with a cheap stereo under her arm, and a Simon and Garfunkle CD from the bargain bin. (Anyone remember “The Nice Price” labels?") Man, we had so much fun with that sound system and album. We’d sit around the living room, analyzing song lyrics. I was even able to help my grandma with a crossword clue. “Joltin’ Joe” for DiMaggio. 4 down. You’re welcome!
No time like the present! And as such, the 3D printing equivalent is now on order. I imagine I’ll eventually upgrade, but for now - let’s get some kids feeling how cool space is!
