“On your left, buddy.”
I put my hand on his shoulder, and blew by his slow walk.
I’m getting that old man strength.
College kids and their headphones. Bah.
(Translation: I wish I were young, and had cool headphones, but here I am, confounded that Christian’s Pizza in Charlottesville has not two, but THREE locations, and I parked a half mile from the wrong one. RUN! Boy was I late. And old. And late.)
Maybe he looked up. I don’t know. My big boy shoes, made for conforming, not performing, smacked the pavement all the way down the hill.
Two bits of good news: the cardio at the gym is paying off (a little), and Matthew Stoss is a patient man.
Thirty minutes later after yelling at the GPS and scrambling to find a parking garage, , I staggered, huffing and puffing, into the right pizza joint on a cold January afternoon. Matt, finishing a note on his Aristotle, looked up.
“Good to meet you, dude.”
We had done a phone interview about the podcast story a few weeks prior, talking about hosting a showcase for senior men to share their life experience.
“I’d love to pick your brain about writing” I said afterwards.
“Yeah man, let’s get some food soon.”
So we talked shop over pizza, and hit the indie bookstore down the street. (Shoutout to Daphne and Charlie at 2nd Act Books.) Perks of the job, man. I snagged a collection of essays of Frances Bacon. He recommended Cather’s Death Comes For The Archbishop.
Matt’s story about the podcast with the “silverbacks” hit the newsstands today.
Extra! Extra! Read all about it….
I sure am honored, both by the thoughtful writing, and getting to do all of this in the first place.

I listen while John shares a story. Mega props to Tristan Williams for the incredible photos. He hung out while we taped the latest show, taking these fine art portraits and sharing a few stories of his career. We hope to have both him and Matt back as guests on the show soon.
To Matt, Tristan the photographer, Lisa, and all the “C’dogs”…thank you.
